Local vs Cloud: how long do you wait?

Local and Cloud dictation can feel different even with the same recording. Local recognition uses your Windows PC. Cloud also depends on your connection and the online service. Compare the pause until the text is ready in the app where you work.

Where the waiting time comes from

In Local Mode the installed Whisper model processes the recording on your PC. Model readiness and available compute affect that work. The result then has to reach the destination text field.

Cloud adds an upload and a return trip. A fast service can still feel slow on an unstable connection. The diagram shows these stages rather than measured durations.

At a glance

What happens after you stop speaking

A conceptual view of the waiting period. The boxes show stages, not measured durations; translation and rewriting are excluded here.

Local
RecognitionThe selected model processes the recording on your computer. Available compute and model readiness affect the wait.
DeliveryThe recognized text is prepared for the destination. A quick recognizer still needs to produce a usable result.
Cloud
TransferMoving the recording to the online service adds a network-dependent part to the wait.
RecognitionThe service processes the audio. Service conditions and response variation matter as well as model speed.
Return & deliveryThe response returns to the computer and becomes available as text. This is the end of the user's waiting time.

Extra stages do not automatically mean a slower result. Their duration and reliability determine the experience.

Try a few ordinary dictations

Speak several short messages of similar length. Start timing when you finish recording and stop when the complete text is available. Use the same destination app for both modes.

Pay attention to repeated delays and occasional stalls. A long wait during a quick reply can be more disruptive than a small difference in the usual response. A long file processed in the background creates a different workload.

Keep the extra processing the same

Mail mode and other dictation modes can add an Assistant step after recognition. Microphone translation also adds processing. Compare plain transcription first or keep those options identical in both runs.

The end of the test matters too. Text shown in the result panel is ready to copy, while text inserted into the editor is ready to edit there. Use one of those milestones consistently.

Choose the mode for your working day

Local Mode keeps recognition on the PC and can run without sending the recording to an online provider once its models are installed. It is a useful option when connection quality or keeping audio on the device matters.

WhisperARC Cloud requires paid access and available credits. OpenAI KEY is a separate online option billed through your own OpenAI account. The processing-mode guide explains the three choices and what happens when a request fails.
